21 things I’ve learned in my 21 years

1. It doesn’t cost you anything to be kind to others; even the smallest act of kindness can improve someone else’s day
2. Relationships of any kind, whether romantic or platonic, are a 2 WAY STREET. If you don’t feel like the other person is making the same effort you are, then you really shouldn’t be spending all your time trying to please them. Take that time and spend it on yourself instead.
3. It’s okay not to be okay! Ask for help, talk to someone, and acknowledge your personal struggles whatever they may be.
4. Do what you love, and don’t apologize for it. Maybe you love adult colouring books (guilty as charged) or maybe you play the trumpet and you’re worried people will think that it’s “lame” or “uncool,” but who cares? You love it and it makes you happy; that’s all that matters.
5. On a similar note, don’t let your fears of other’s judgment stop you from progressing in life. People are going to judge you, it’s inevitable, but that shouldn’t stop you from being true to you.
6. Sleep is so important. Honestly, I’m a huge sleeper, and I’m not saying everyone needs to get a good 10-12 hours like I sometimes do 😅😅 but it really is an important way to recharge physically, emotionally, and mentally. So, if you’re wondering whether you should keep studying at 2am or close the books for the night, choose the sleep. I promise it will help.
7. Self love is hard. I feel like we’re bombarded with messages telling us to love ourselves, be body positive, and so on. But no one really seems to tell us how to do that, or to acknowledge that it’s not just simply something that you can immediately will into being. There will be good days and there will be bad days. It’s important to be insightful and remind yourself of the things you like about yourself, especially on the bad days. Sometimes you have to love yourself even when you hate yourself, and yes that’s as hard as it sounds, but you can do it.
8. Comparing yourself to other people never ends well. You can’t be anything more than yourself. We’re all guilty of comparison but next time you find yourself wanting to look like Gigi Hadid, remember you’re the only you there is, and that’s pretty damn cool.
9. As much as external validation can be nice, the only way to really feel fulfilled is through internal validation. I know it feels good getting a lot of likes on your latest Instagram post, or hearing a compliment, but all of that can be brushed off if you don’t feel good about yourself. It’s your self perception that really matters in the end.
10. Grades are just grades. If you don’t do well on one test or assignment, the world will not end. You just have to get back up, do your best, and try again on the next thing you have to do.
11. Some days you won’t be able to do everything you wanted to. Some days just going through the motions of a day will feel like climbing Mount Everest. Not every day is a good day, but a bad day doesn’t mean a bad life. Just do the best you can and remember that tomorrow is always a new day.
12. Family is important. When you’re growing up, there are definitely times when you take your family for granted. The truth is though, family is one of the most important things in life. People come and go, but family is forever.
13. Friends are important too! Cherish your true friendships, and don’t forget to show those important people how much they mean to you.
14. Mental illness is real, it’s hard, and it sucks. But the fight is worth it, and you are worth it too.
15. Listen to your body. If you’re hungry, eat. If you’re tired, sleep. If you have a cold, rest. Treat your body with respect.
16. Life is full of surprises and it’s rarely predictable. You never know what life is going to throw at you next. It’s always a surprise, that is the one guarantee.
17. Winter is pretty to look at, but cold weather is horrendous. Snow is beautiful, but when my toes are numb and I can feel the wind biting my skin raw, winter is not so much fun. Don’t worry about how cute your outfit is, worry about LAYERS and staying warm.
18. Going out and partying is fun, but so is watching Netflix in your PJs. It’s all about balance! Do a bit of both and you’ve got it made.
19. Experiences are so valuable. Whether it’s going to a concert, going on vacation, or going to dinner with a friend, experiences teach us life lessons, help us grow, and give us memories that last a life-time! You don’t want to sit back later on in life and wonder what would have been if you’d taken the chance to go to LA when it was presented to you.
20. Time flies; every year goes by faster. So, take the time to live in the moment, and cherish the time you have. Try not to wish time away (as we all do at times) because soon enough, it’ll be years later and you’ll be wishing you were back in University – even during finals season.
21. You think you know everything right now, but I promise you do not. So much changes in even a year, and I guarantee next year you’ll look back with a slightly or maybe radically different perspective then you have right now. Life is all about moving forward and learning.
