Making Choices For You

I’ve never been too good at making decisions. Seriously, I’ll spend half an hour scrolling through Netflix and I still can’t pick something to watch (I usually just throw on Friends because you can never go wrong with Friends). However, we all have to make decisions in our lives, no matter how hard it may be to do. It can be especially hard when we make decisions that benefit ourselves. It can be easy to feel selfish, uncomfortable and guilty when we work to better ourselves, but it really is important in creating the life we want to live. People aren’t always going to understand why you choose to do what you do, but that’s okay! It’s not their life, it’s yours.

Recently I’ve found myself having to make some hard but important decisions in order to do what’s best for me. Over the past few months, I found myself in a high state of anxiety and discomfort in my current situation. I knew if I didn’t change something, my mental health would continue to decline faster and faster. So, I made a choice. Having three online classes, and mandatory class only once a week, I was able to make the decision to basically move home. Being in my last semester of University,  this was not an easy decision to make, but I knew it was what I needed to do for me.

Since being home my anxiety has lessened a ton, which reassures me that I’ve made the right decision. I’m able to focus on my growing passion for fitness, increasing my nutrition, and maintaining my mental health without feeling uncomfortable doing so or pressured to act in ways that are detrimental to my mentality.

Making decisions that benefit yourself is never easy, but this experience has shown me how important it is to make those decisions. And it’s something I plan to continue doing as I go forward in my life. Don’t get me wrong, I am also an incredibly generous and thoughtful person, but I’m learning how to better balance my people-pleasoning tendencies with what I need to do in order to be the best version of myself. If I don’t take care of myself both physically and mentally, how am I supposed to truly help anyone else? It’s simply not possible.

So don’t be afraid to make decisions for you. If you want to spend a day working on your future career goals, go for it! If you want to go out one night and drink a whole bottle of wine, go do it! If you want to write a blog post, just write! Don’t expect too much of yourself, but don’t expect too little either. You’re capable of amazing things, that I can promise you. You just have to believe in yourself, work hard and stay true to who you are.

Here’s my challenge to you this week. Make a decision for you. Not for your friends, not for your boss, not to please anyone else; make a decision for you. Working to be the best you, is the first step in making a difference.
